description: Audio recorded interview and photographs by Jesse Barber 7-2-2020. David is a crossover, hybrid variety just like the tomatoes he loves to grow. He grew up around gardening, canning, and wine making with his family. He took these early experiences and added his collegiate education to take these traditions further than his family had. He spoke about how many people have passed down canning recipes but they're not all safe, noting that it takes a certain amount of heat and ingredients to kill bacteria that can breed in canned goods. High acidic foods tend to be safer in keeping bacteria at bay, but he is cautious to eat canned goods from others who say that it's a family recipe. David's knowledge is highly scientific, taking his grandfather's more primitive wine making of sugar, water, and tomatoes to another level. Family gave him the interest in these practices, science gave him the tools to make precise measurements to enhance these traditions.
