Transcript: BEREA EXEMPT FROM TAXATION 27 prevailing in the neighboring city of Winchester. The revenue derived from the outside users goes wholly to the College and from it no person or individual has ever derived any profit. "The Institution maintains a printing department as a part of its industrial education. Here general printing and book-binding are done. Some confusion arose in this aspect of the case because of the fact that a newspaper was printed in this plant. This newspaper is a separate corporation and has an arrangement whereby it leases or rents the printing facilities for the purpose of printing a paper, but the institution derives no income save this rental income, nor does it own the newspaper. "The Institution maintains a small co-operative store and handles text books, toilet articles and the like which it keeps for sale for the students. This store is remote from the village of Berea in an obscure place. The materials are sold at a minimum of profit sufficient only to pay running expenses, and taking the last five years together there has been a deficit of perhaps $60. According to testimony it has not sold $10 worth of good to others than students, and outside customers are discouraged. "The Institution also owns and operates upon its grounds the hotel known as Boone Tavern. This was built with the endowment funds of the Institution with the expectation that it would be rented to outside parties, but it has been found impossible to obtain renters who are in accord with the principles of the institution.
