Transcript: BEREA COLLEGE o BEREA o KENTUCKY Office of the Dean February 26, 1964 To Members of the Berea College Faculty: The March on Frankfort, scheduled for March 5, 1964, is a citizens demonstration of support of adequate civil rights legislation for Kentucky, The March is also a living petition to the General Assembly of this Commonwealth for the legal removal of longstanding discrimination against American citizens and for the redress of their ancient grievances. The College Cabinet has approved participation in this March by interested students. 1. Students who actually take part in this March will be excused from class attendance on March 5, providing they meet academic requirements for missing them. 2. Students who are not participating in the March are to meet their classes and labor appointments as scheduled. 3. Because of the indispensable nature of some student labor, all participants in the March must secure excuses from their labor superintendents prior to leaving the campus for Frankfort. It is likely that students who are engaged in essential work will not be excused. 4. Faculty members who are intending to participate in the March on Frankfort may miss their class appointments for this purpose, If possible, they should make arrangements for their classes during their absence. 5. The College Dean's Office should be notified in advance by teachers who are to be away from their classes for the March on Frankfort. 6. Classes and other scheduled activities, as far as possible, should be carried on as usual. The March on Frankfort is the manifestation of a principle on which Berea College is founded, It is good for our students and staff members to participate if they believe this to be a good way to demonstrate their belief in the equality and brotherhood of all men regardless of race, color, or status. Others who believe in these principles with equal intensity may abstain from participation in the March in good faith and without legitimate criticism from others because they decry the method chosen. Cordially, [signed] Louis Smith
