description: The Berea College Conference On Appalachian Development, April 22-23, 1964, followed on President Lyndon Johnson's January State-of-the-Union address in which he had declared and "unconditional war on poverty in America." The conference featured a series of academics, government planners, and private citizens expressing their views on the nature, extent, and possible solutions to the social and economic problems of the Appalachian region of Kentucky. The next day after the conference, April 24th, President Johnson made his much publicized visit to Martin and Johnson Counties, Kentucky. Harry Caudill's influential "Night Comes to the Cumberlands" had been published in July of 1963. At the Berea conference, he spoke in response to presentations by John Whisman, the representative of the Conference of Appalachain Governors and Executive Secretary of the President' Appalachian Regional Commission and University of Chicago economist, Mary Jean Bowman author of "Resources and People in East Kentucky; Problems and Potentials of a Lagging Economy."
